IGNORANCE

Doctrine & Theology • Both
Ignorance is lack of knowledge or understanding and may include unwitting error. Scripture distinguishes excusable ignorance from willful rejection of known truth, while teaching that increased light brings increased responsibility.
Biblical Usage
The Law distinguishes unwitting error, which was considered in judgment, from other wrongdoing. The New Testament speaks both of ignorance that God overlooked and of ignorance connected with unbelief, rejection, or willful suppression of truth. Increased light brings increased responsibility, while Christ’s prayer and Paul’s testimony show that mercy was extended to some who acted ignorantly.
