Gedaliah
Gedaliah was the governor appointed over the Jewish remnant in Judah after Jerusalem’s destruction. He ruled from Mizpah but was treacherously murdered by Ishmael; the name also belongs to several other Old Testament men.
Biblical Usage
Gedaliah governed from Mizpah and encouraged the remnant to remain in the land and cultivate it. Ishmael treacherously murdered him and those with him, after which the remaining Jews fled toward Egypt. Other men named Gedaliah appear in priestly, prophetic, and political contexts.
