Gad was Jacob’s son by Zilpah and the ancestor of the tribe of Gad. The name is associated with fortune, and Gad’s descendants received land east of the Jordan. Gad was also the name of a prophet and seer who served David.
Biblical Usage
The tribe descended from Jacob’s son Gad and occupied territory east of the Jordan. Gad the prophet advised David, participated in matters concerning the census judgment, helped arrange the worship of the temple, and was called the king’s seer.
