Esau was Isaac’s elder twin son and Jacob’s brother. Also called Edom, he sold his birthright for food and later settled in Mount Seir, becoming the ancestor of the Edomites.
Biblical Usage
Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for red pottage and later lost Isaac’s covenant blessing. His conduct is presented as an example of sacrificing a future inheritance for immediate appetite. He was also called Edom, and his descendants and land bore that name.
