Ephraim
People & Groups • Both
Ephraim was Joseph’s second son, whom Jacob blessed before his older brother Manasseh. The name also designates the tribe descended from him, its territory, and at times the northern kingdom of Israel; it also names a town near the wilderness in the New Testament.
Biblical Usage
Jacob deliberately placed Ephraim, the younger son, before Manasseh when blessing Joseph’s sons. The tribe later held an important place among Israel’s tribes, and its name could represent the northern kingdom of Israel. A town called Ephraim is also mentioned in connection with Jesus’ withdrawal.
