ENEMY
A person or group that opposes or hates another. Scripture often speaks of Israel’s enemies, while Jesus commands His followers to love their enemies.
Biblical Usage
The Old Testament frequently speaks of Israel’s enemies and cries to God for deliverance. Jesus gave a higher command than the former saying to hate one’s enemy: “Love your enemies.” Scripture also teaches kindness toward an enemy and presents God’s gracious purpose toward the whole world.
