EARRING
Jewish Life & Customs • Both
Earrings were ornamental pendants worn by men and women in the ancient Near East. They could be made of gold and precious stones and may sometimes have served as amulets.
Biblical Usage
Abraham’s servant placed an earring on Rebekah as part of the customary adornment accompanying bracelets. Job’s relatives and friends gave him each a gold earring. Earrings taken away in another passage may have had a religious or protective significance rather than being mere decoration.
