Dogs were used for guarding homes and flocks, but packs of semi-wild dogs also scavenged and were viewed with contempt. Scripture uses “dog” figuratively for humiliation, fierce enemies, evildoers, and those excluded from God’s kingdom.

Scripture uses dogs figuratively for fierce enemies, false apostles, evil workers, persecutors, and those excluded from the kingdom of heaven. The expression can also describe a person’s own lowliness or unworthiness.
