Dan
Dan was Jacob’s fifth son and the ancestor of one of Israel’s tribes. His name means “judge”; the tribe received territory in the west but later migrated north and settled at the city also called Dan.
Biblical Usage
Jacob said, “Dan shall judge his people,” a saying associated with Samson, who belonged to the tribe. The tribe first received territory west of Benjamin and Ephraim but later captured Laish and renamed it Dan.
