Commerce
Commerce in biblical times included local markets, caravan trade, international land routes, and maritime shipping. Palestine’s position between Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and the Mediterranean made trade important throughout its history.
Biblical Usage
Scripture depicts markets near city gates, trade with Egypt and surrounding lands, caravans carrying spices and other goods, and grain commerce. Solomon developed land and sea trade and received wealth through tariffs. Jesus used commercial activities in illustrations, while Paul used roads, ships, and trading contacts during missionary work.
