CANON OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
The canon of the New Testament is the recognized collection of its twenty-seven books. The church’s recognition of these writings developed gradually as apostolic teaching was preserved, read in congregations, defended against error, and received as authoritative Scripture.
Biblical Usage
The writings were read in Christian assemblies, used in teaching, and valued as preserving the words of Jesus and the teaching of the apostles. Their authority was increasingly affirmed as the apostles departed and as the church defended the faith against heresy.
