Canaanites
The Canaanites were the peoples descended from Canaan who occupied the land later given to Israel. They included numerous tribes and were known for trade, seafaring, and idolatrous worship.
Biblical Usage
Israel was commanded to dispossess the Canaanites, though the extermination was not fully carried out. Surviving groups later remained in the land and were subjected to bond-service under Solomon.
