Camel
The camel was a major beast of burden and transport in the ancient Near East, especially the one-humped Arabian camel. It provided travel, carrying power, hair, milk, and leather, though its flesh was forbidden to Israel as unclean; Jesus used it in proverbs about wealth and hypocrisy.
Biblical Usage
Camels appear in accounts of patriarchal wealth, travel, trade, and war. Jesus used the camel in proverbs about the difficulty of a rich person entering the kingdom and about religious people who overlooked great sins while attending to small matters. John the Baptist wore camel’s hair.
