To break, destroy, burst, open, scatter, profane, or violate, depending on context. Scripture also uses the word for breaking bread in Christian fellowship and for breaking faith or covenant.
Biblical Usage
Scripture speaks of breaking objects, covenants, wedlock, and faith; opening or bursting forth; scattering nations; and breaking bread in the Lord’s Supper. The New Testament also uses the term for breaking through and bringing the body under discipline.
