Bondage
Bondage describes slavery, national oppression, or captivity, such as Israel’s condition in Egypt and later under Babylon and Persia. In the New Testament it also pictures slavery to fear, sin, corruption, or legalistic religious observance.
Biblical Usage
Israel’s bondage in Egypt is called the house of bondage, and similar language describes captivity under Babylon and Persia. The New Testament uses bondage figuratively for fear, physical corruption, legalistic religious systems, and libertinism that falsely claims to be freedom.
