Bishop

People & Groups • New Testament
A bishop, or overseer, was a leader responsible for watching over and caring for a Christian congregation. In the New Testament the terms bishop and elder appear to refer to the same office.
Biblical Usage
The New Testament applies the term to local Christian leaders who rule, oversee, and care for God’s flock. It is used as an alternative to “elder,” and Christ himself is called the Bishop of souls. Churches could have a body or college of presbyter-bishops.
