A bier was an open coffin or flat frame used to carry a dead body to the grave. Jesus touched a bier at Nain before raising a widow’s son.
Biblical Usage
David followed Abner’s bier in mourning. At Nain, Jesus approached and touched the bier carrying the only son of a widow, then commanded the young man to arise. The episode presents Christ’s compassion and power over death.
