Bethany
Places & Geography • New Testament
Bethany was the village near Jerusalem where Martha, Mary, and Lazarus lived and where Jesus raised Lazarus. Jesus also lodged there and ascended near it; the name is also associated with the place beyond the Jordan where John baptized.
Biblical Usage
Bethany was closely associated with Jesus’ ministry. Lazarus was raised there, Jesus lodged there, and memorable events occurred at the house of Simon and in the homes of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Jesus was led out toward Bethany at his ascension. “Bethany beyond the Jordan” is given in the Revised Version for Bethabara, the place associated with John’s baptism.
