Bar-jesus

People & Groups • New Testament
Bar-jesus was the Jewish name of Elymas, a sorcerer and false prophet at Paphos in Cyprus. He opposed Paul’s preaching and was temporarily struck blind by divine judgment.
Biblical Usage
When Elymas tried to turn Sergius Paulus away from the faith, Paul, acting by the Holy Spirit, struck him blind. The judgment revealed divine power to the proconsul, who believed after being astonished at the Lord’s teaching.
