A Visit With Jesus
 Clear

Banquet

Jewish Life & Customs • Both
A banquet was a formal feast for invited guests, often held in the evening and accompanied by music, wine, honor, and celebration. Scripture also records religious, wedding, royal, and sometimes excessive banquets.
Biblical Usage
Banquets appear in royal, private, wedding, birthday, sacrificial, and festival settings. Jesus attended a wedding feast and a meal given in his honor, while his teaching directed hosts to invite the poor rather than merely the rich and influential. Scripture also warns of revelry and excess at such feasts.
