Baal
God • Old Testament
Baal was the chief male deity of the Phoenicians and Canaanites. Israelites repeatedly fell into his idolatrous worship, which was condemned by the Lord; the name was also used for a Benjamite and a place.
Biblical Usage
Israel repeatedly fell into Baal worship, including the worship of Baal-peor. Baal became especially prominent in the northern kingdom during Ahab’s reign, and the worship also appeared in Judah. The prophets and reforming kings opposed it, and the worship was finally ended among the people through the discipline of the captivity.
