Azazel
Azazel is the designation associated with the second goat in the Day of Atonement ritual. After Israel’s sins were confessed over it, the goat was sent into the wilderness, symbolizing the complete removal of guilt.
Biblical Usage
Together, the two goats formed one sin-sacrifice: the goat for the Lord represented atonement, while the goat sent away represented the complete removal of sin. The laying on of both hands symbolized the transfer of confessed guilt, and the goat’s removal signified that the guilt had been carried away.
