Army
An army is an organized body of people prepared for warfare. Israel’s forces were arranged by tribes, families, and numbered units, while kings later established professional troops, bodyguards, chariots, and cavalry.
Biblical Usage
Israel marched from Egypt in military order, and each tribe had its own banner and leader. The army fought in the wilderness and during the conquest, while the monarchy introduced professional troops, royal guards, cavalry, chariots, and more formal ranks. The New Testament also refers to the Roman army’s legions, cohorts, maniples, centuries, and centurions.
