Alphaeus
Alphaeus was the father of James the Less and also the father of Levi, or Matthew. The sources distinguish these references, and the proposed identification of Alphaeus with Clopas cannot be established with certainty.
Biblical Usage
Alphaeus is connected with James in the apostolic lists and with Levi in the account of his call. The identification of Alphaeus with Clopas, and of the two Alphaeuses with one another, remains uncertain.
