Original Language • Both
An alphabet is an ordered set of written signs representing elementary speech sounds. Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek used alphabetic systems descended from the ancient Canaanite or Phoenician tradition.
Biblical Usage
The Canaanite or Phoenician alphabet was used for Old Testament Hebrew and Aramaic and for New Testament Greek. Biblical acrostics, including several Psalms and passages in Lamentations and Proverbs, reflect the ordered Hebrew alphabet.
