Abraham, originally called Abram, was called by God from Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan. God made a covenant with him, promised a great people through his descendants, and used him as the patriarch through whom blessing would come to the nations.
Biblical Usage
Abraham is presented as a man who trusted God’s call and promises. God renewed the covenant with him, gave circumcision as its sign, promised that Sarah would bear Isaac, and used Abraham as the ancestor of the promised line. Abraham also worshiped God, gave a tenth to Melchizedek, and interceded for Sodom.
