Ablution
Ablution is ceremonial washing for purification or preparation for worship. Scripture describes washing the hands, feet, or whole body in connection with priestly service, ritual uncleanness, and other religious observances.
Biblical Usage
Priests washed before their service and before approaching the altar. Washings were also prescribed for various forms of ritual defilement. Jesus confronted the Pharisees’ emphasis on ceremonial handwashing by directing attention to inward purity.
