Abel
Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve, a keeper of sheep, whose offering was accepted by God because it was offered in faith. His brother Cain murdered him, making Abel the first martyr; the New Testament calls him righteous.
Biblical Usage
Abel’s offering was made by faith and was regarded as more excellent than Cain’s. Jesus called him righteous and the first martyr. The New Testament contrasts Abel’s offering with Christ’s sacrifice, presenting Christ’s blood as the reality foreshadowed by sacrificial offerings.
