Abaddon
Abaddon means “destruction” or “ruin.” In the Old Testament it describes the realm of the dead in its dark and destructive aspect; in Revelation, Abaddon is the angel who rules the bottomless pit and is also called Apollyon, “the Destroyer.”
Biblical Usage
Abaddon occurs in several Old Testament passages alongside Sheol, death, or the grave, describing the dreadful realm of the dead. It is known only to God and is associated with the absence of declarations of divine lovingkindness. In Revelation 9:11, the name is personalized as the angel of the bottomless pit, called Apollyon in Greek.
