Zachariah
Zachariah was the son of Jeroboam II and the last king of Jehu’s dynasty in Israel, reigning only six months before being killed by Shallum. The name is also borne by the father of Abi, mother of King Hezekiah.
Definition
Zachariah, or Zechariah, means “remembered by the Lord.” The name belonged to several biblical persons, including the son of Jeroboam II, the last king of Jehu’s dynasty in Israel, and the father of Abi, mother of King Hezekiah.
Biblical Usage
Zachariah son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel for six months, did evil in the Lord’s sight, and was killed by Shallum. His death ended the dynasty of Jehu. Another Zachariah was Abi’s father.
Historical Background
Zachariah son of Jeroboam succeeded his father after an interregnum of ten years. His reign ended with his assassination by Shallum.

Remembered by the Lord. (1.) Son of Jeroboam II., king of Israel. On the death of his father there was an interregnum of ten years, at the end of which he succeeded to the throne, which he occupied only six months, having been put to death by Shallum, who usurped the throne. “He did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done” (2 Kings 14:29; 15:8-12). In him the dynasty of Jehu came to an end. (2.) The father of Abi, who was the mother of Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:2).

<p>zak-a-ri'-a (Zacharias; the King James Version, Zacharias):</p><p>(1) The son of Barachiah, who, Jesus says, was slain between the temple and the altar (Mt 23:35; Lu 11:51). The allusion seems to be to the murder of Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada (2Ch 24:20). In this case "Barachiah" would seem to be a gloss which has crept into the text through confusion with the name of the father of the prophet Zechariah, BERECHIAH (which see).</p><p>(2) See ZECHARIAH.</p>
