Shenazzar was a son of Jeconiah and uncle of Zerubbabel. He may be identical with Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah who brought temple vessels back from Babylon.
Definition
Shenazzar was a son of Jeconiah, or Jehoiachin, and an uncle of Zerubbabel. He may be identical with Sheshbazzar, called the prince of Judah in Ezra.
Biblical Usage
Shenazzar appears in the family record of Jeconiah in 1 Chronicles. If the proposed identification is correct, he was also connected with the return of temple vessels from Babylon.
Historical Background
The name is difficult and has been treated as possibly a corruption of another Babylonian form. Some have related it to Sin-usur, meaning “Sin, the moon-god, protect.”

<p>she-naz'-ar (shen'atstsar): A son of Jeconiah (Jehoiachin) and uncle of Zerubbabel (1Ch 3:18, Codex Vaticanus and Codex Alexandrinus Sanesar; Lucian, Sanasar; Vulgate (Jerome's Latin Bible, 390-405 A.D.) Sennaser, Senneser). It is highly probable that Sheshbazzar (Ezr 1:8,11), "the prince of Judah," and Shenazzar are identical (so Meyer, Rothstein, etc.). The name is difficult; some suggest a corruption of shushbalatstsar, and as equivalent to Sin-usur, "Sin (the moon-god) protect."</p>
