Jerubbesheth is a form of Jerubbaal, the name of Gideon. “Besheth,” meaning shame, replaced “Baal” in this form of the name.

Definition

Jerubbesheth is a form of Jerubbaal, the name of Gideon. Its first element retains the sense of contending, while Besheth means “shame” or “shameful thing.”

Biblical Usage

Jerubbesheth occurs once as a name for Gideon. It corresponds to Jerubbaal in the account of Israel’s leaders.

Historical Background

The supplied material explains that later editors substituted bosheth, “shame,” for baal, “lord,” in names associated with Baal. This produced forms such as Jerubbesheth.
