Jehozadak was the son of the high priest Seraiah and was taken captive to Babylon. He did not serve as high priest, but was the father of Jeshua, who served after the return from exile.

Definition

Jehozadak, also called Jozadak or Josedech, was the son of Seraiah, the high priest at the time of the Babylonian captivity. He was carried captive to Babylon and became the father of Jeshua, or Joshua, the priest who returned with Zerubbabel. Jehozadak himself did not attain the high priesthood.

Biblical Usage

Jehozadak is chiefly remembered as the priestly father of Jeshua. His name appears in genealogical and postexilic passages, while variant forms occur in Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai, Zechariah, and related writings.

Historical Background

Jehozadak was taken to Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar ordered the execution of his father, Seraiah, at Riblah. His captivity links the pre-exilic priesthood with the priestly community restored after the exile.
