Janoah was the name of two towns: one on the boundary of Ephraim and another in the uplands of Naphtali, which was captured by the Assyrians.

Definition

Janoah, or Janohah, was the name of two places: one on the northeastern boundary of Ephraim and another in the uplands of Naphtali. The Naphtalite town was captured by the king of Assyria.

Biblical Usage

The Ephraimite Janoah is mentioned in the description of the tribal boundary. The Naphtalite Janoah appears among the places taken by Tiglath-pileser.

Historical Background

The Ephraimite site is identified with Khirbet Yanun, near Nablus. The Naphtalite site may be Yanuch, east of Tyre, though the identification is not certain.
