Drachm
A drachm was a Greek silver coin. In Jesus’ parable of the lost coin, a drachm represents a valuable piece of money eagerly sought until it is found.
Definition
A drachm was a Greek silver coin whose weight varied according to the different talents in use. In Luke, the “piece of silver” in the parable of the lost coin appears to represent a drachm or a denarius.
Biblical Usage
The drachm is especially associated with Jesus’ parable of the woman who lost one of her coins, searched for it, and rejoiced when she found it. The coin represents something valuable that was diligently sought.
Historical Background
The drachm was a Greek monetary unit and is also mentioned in 2 Maccabees. Its weight was not uniform because different talents were used.
