The Angel of God Appears to the Prophet Elijah

The scene is particularly fascinating: the old prophet seated exhausted, his back leaning against a juniper and his left hand supporting his head, observes a magnificent angel with outstretched wings indicating the way to God. Top left between the juniper branches the Corvo brings a hot cake.

The color scheme of the painting is truly remarkable with the hanging angel beaming with light. In the background a bright landscape with the sunset over Mount Oreb.

This beautiful painting from the end of the 17th century represents the biblical episode which sees the appearance of the Angel of God to the prophet Elijah in the desert. Elijah is tired, hungry and thirsty and by invoking death he is visited by the Divine Messenger who brings him water and food.
