Paul Healing a Man Who Could Not Walk

Karel Dujardin was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Although he did a few portraits and a few history paintings of religious subjects, most of his work is small Italianate landscape scenes with animals and peasants, and other genre scenes.

This painting measures height 179 cm x width 139 cm x depth 9 cm. It is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Here, the Apostle Paul towers above a group of sick people. When he heals the feet of a man in the name of the Christian god in Lystra, a city in contemporary Turkey, the onlookers take him to be the heathen god Mercury. Du Jardin understood the art of using figural gestures to enhance the pathos and drama of a scene.
