There is a sense of calmness surrounding this work as the victim’s face lacks any pain or strain, instead he seems to accept his martyrdom with open arms, which is contrasted with the mood of the executioners who are struggling it out to perform their task with efficiency. There is no spectator to witness the crucifixion which therefore transforms it to a personal crisis and not a historical affair.
