Jacob Wrestles an Angel

Breenbergh put the story in a mediterranean landscape. In the foreground to the left are Jacob's cape and walking stick.

Jacob wrestling with the angel is described in the Book of Genesis (chapter 32:22–32. The "angel" in question is referred to as  both "man"  and "God"  and the account includes the renaming of Jacob as Israel.

This oil on panel measures height: 50 cm (19.6 in)  ; width: 68 cm (26.7 in). It is in a collection in the  Rijksmuseum  in Amsterdam.
