A Visit With Jesus

Jim Padgett (born 1931) is an American illustrator best known for the extensive biblical artwork created for the Read-n-Grow Picture Bible, published by Sweet Publishing in 1984. Rather than concentrating on a small number of famous biblical scenes, Padgett illustrated stories throughout much of the Old and New Testaments. Many narratives were presented as sequences of related pictures, allowing the illustrations to function as visual storytelling. Sweet Publishing later made this large body of artwork available under a Creative Commons license. As a result, Padgett's illustrations have continued to circulate widely through Bible-teaching resources and digital collections.

Biography

James "Jim" Padgett was born on January 24, 1931. He became an American illustrator whose best-documented work is his extensive contribution to the Read-n-Grow Picture Bible.

The Read-n-Grow Picture Bible was published by Sweet Publishing in 1984. Libby Weed served as editor, and Padgett provided the illustrations. The 319-page volume retold stories from both the Old and New Testaments for younger readers.

Padgett's contribution extended far beyond a small selection of major biblical events. He created illustrations for narratives throughout much of Scripture. The surviving collection includes material from Genesis and the other books of the Pentateuch. It continues through Israel's historical books and includes material from the prophets. The New Testament collection provides extensive coverage of the Gospels and Acts, together with illustrations associated with several epistles and Revelation.

The illustrations later received a much larger audience through digital distribution. Sweet Publishing made the artwork available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. The collection was subsequently distributed through resources such as Wikimedia Commons and FreeBibleimages.

Published biographical information about Padgett himself is limited. His surviving biblical illustrations therefore provide the clearest record of his work. Their continued use in churches, educational resources, and online Bible projects has given the Read-n-Grow artwork a reach extending well beyond its original 1984 publication.

Artistic Style

Padgett's biblical illustrations were created primarily for storytelling and instruction. His images use clearly defined figures and straightforward compositions. The central action of a scene is usually easy to recognize without extensive explanation.

A major characteristic of the collection is its sequential approach. Many biblical narratives are represented by several related illustrations. Characters remain recognizable as the story progresses from one event to another. This gives the artwork qualities similar to a picture book or visual narrative.

Expression and gesture carry much of the storytelling. Padgett frequently uses the posture and reactions of his figures to communicate fear, surprise, anger, grief, compassion, or joy. Background details establish the location without competing with the principal action.

The illustrations reflect the conventions of twentieth-century popular Bible illustration. They were intended to make biblical narratives visually accessible rather than to provide archaeological reconstructions of the ancient world.

Biblical Art Significance

Jim Padgett's importance to biblical illustration comes especially from the breadth of his work. The Read-n-Grow Picture Bible project provided images for a remarkable range of biblical narratives. Many events that rarely appeared in traditional fine art received their own illustrations.

The sequential nature of the collection is equally important. A single biblical story may be represented by several images. This allows viewers to follow the development of the narrative rather than encounter only its most famous moment.

This approach makes Padgett's work particularly useful for Bible education. Individual illustrations can be connected closely with chapters, passages, and events in Scripture. The images can also be presented in sequence when teaching an extended narrative.

The later licensing of the collection significantly increased its influence. Sweet Publishing released the images under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. This allowed the artwork to be copied and adapted under the terms of that license. Wikimedia Commons subsequently organized a large collection of Padgett's illustrations by biblical book and chapter.

FreeBibleimages has also distributed the artwork as Bible-story resources for teachers. This digital circulation has allowed illustrations originally created for a 1984 picture Bible to remain useful decades later.

For A Visit With Jesus, Padgett's work serves a somewhat different purpose from the paintings of artists such as Tissot, Doré, or Rembrandt. Its particular strength is comprehensive visual storytelling. The collection provides illustrations for many biblical passages for which historical fine-art images are difficult to find.
